Brian Reilly is chief operating officer for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. In this position, he is responsible for delivering rewarding member experiences across the society’s portfolio of digital properties, as well as making sure the organization’s information technology infrastructure empowers its employees to be successful. ASA’s Digital Product Management, IT, Education, and Publications & Digital Content teams report to him.
Prior to joining ASA, Reilly was the chief digital officer for Crain Communications, a business publisher of brands including Advertising Age, Automotive News, Autoweek, Modern Healthcare, Pensions & Investments, and local business properties across the United States. In that position, he drove the company’s transformation from a 100-year-old print-centric publisher into a digital- and mobile-first media company. Also at Crain, Reilly was director of digital strategy for Crain’s Chicago Business, where he led a rebranding of ChicagoBusiness.com, the launch of its successful iPad app and numerous other digital products.
Reilly began his career as a business reporter at the Marion (Ind.) Chronicle-Tribune. He spent two years at the Journal-Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., starting as a copy editor, rising to become the paper’s news editor.
He joined Crain for the first time in 1990 as a copy editor at Electronic Media, eventually becoming the managing editor. From there he moved to Business Marketing as executive editor and was on the team that launched its netMarketing supplement and website. Reilly flipped to the business side when he became general manager/interactive products for Crain’s Chicago Business.
In 1999, Reilly left Crain to become senior partner/director of interactive for OgilvyOne in Chicago. From there he joined Publications International Ltd. as vice president/online product development. After a period as publisher of a sports-oriented startup magazine and website, Reilly ran the digital strategy groups for Trinsic Interactive and Agency.com before rejoining Crain in 2010.
Reilly and his wife Sheila have four children and reside in Western Springs, Ill. He has a BA in English from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA in Finance and Organization Behavior from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
